About Us

Message from the Executive Director, Ernesto Sanchez

Ernesto SanchezIdaho Legal Aid Services, Inc. (ILAS) has provided free legal services to low income Idahoans for over 40 years. We are Idaho’s largest nonprofit law firm with offices throughout the state, three toll free legal advice lines and a website with free legal content. Our mission is to seek equal justice for the underprivileged. Our purpose is to provide legal representation and community education to low income Idahoans.

We advocate for low income Idahoans. Every year we help thousands of Idahoans with critical legal problems such as escaping domestic violence and sexual assault, housing (including wrongful evictions, illegal foreclosures and homelessness), guardianships for abused/neglected children, legal issues facing seniors (such as Medicaid for seniors who need long term care and Social Security), and discrimination issues. Our Indian Law Unit provides specialized services to Idaho's Native Americans. The Migrant Farmworker Law Unit provides legal services to Idaho's migrant population.

I have been with ILAS since 1972 and have been Executive Director since 1978. Our staff includes many attorneys and support staff who have been with ILAS for over 20 years. Our experience enables us to provide expert assistance in the areas in which we practice.

It is with great pride that I salute our staff for their continued commitment to advocacy for Idaho's poor. I thank the numerous attorneys and individuals who govern the affairs of our firm. Special thanks also to the Idaho State Bar, Idaho Law Foundation, Idaho Volunteer Lawyers Program, Idaho Supreme Court, and client and other organizations for joining us as partners in our pursuit of equal justice for all.

We constantly strive to improve our client service and welcome your comments and suggestions.

We welcome your comments and suggestions (We can not give legal advice through the website. Unfortunately, our organization is minimally staffed. In order to save time and work more efficiently, an interview process must be completed to determine whether or not you are eligible for our services. In this way, the attorney’s on staff can devote their time to those who qualify for service, rather than non-qualified clients wishing to receive free legal advice.)
