ORGANIZATION: Idaho Legal Aid Services, Inc.
TITLE: 1L Internship
SALARY: Unpaid

DESCRIPTION: Idaho Legal Aid Services (ILAS) is the largest public interest law firm in the State of Idaho (http://www.idaholegalaid.org).  The firm has offices in Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston, Caldwell, the Nampa Family Justice Center, Boise, Twin Falls, Pocatello and Idaho Falls.  ILAS also maintains two statewide attorney staffed hotlines, a Senior Legal Hotline and Domestic Violence Legal Advice Line.  Firm attorneys, staff, and interns seek equal justice for the underprivileged and poor through legal representation, community outreach, and education. 

This internship position is in ILAS's Idaho Falls office which serves clients in ten southeast Idaho counties.  The intern will work with two attorneys on a variety of housing, domestic violence, and public entitlements cases.  An effective intern will have the opportunity to take on substantial responsibilities, which may include: calling and meeting with clients, interviewing witnesses, assisting in trial preparation, researching and writing briefs to courts and office memoranda, drafting complaints and other pleadings, obtaining and reviewing government files, and conducting educational workshops.  The intern will also be responsible for administrative tasks like filing and copying.

TIME COMMITMENT: The time commitment will generally be governed by University of Idaho requirements to obtain credit.  For interns who will not receive credit the time commitment is negotiable.  At least 15 hours per week for at least 8 weeks during the summer is preferred. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of first year of law school; interest in working for clients with low incomes and on poverty law issues; self-motivation; strong sense of justice; willingness to work under pressure and come early or stay late when necessary; excellent interpersonal and legal writing skills, or a strong interest in improving them.
