DESCRIPTION: Idaho Legal Aid Services (ILAS) is the largest public interest law firm in the State of Idaho.  The firm has offices in Coeur d’Alene, Lewiston, Caldwell, the Nampa Family Justice Center, Boise, Twin Falls, Pocatello and Idaho Falls.  ILAS also maintains three statewide attorney staffed hotlines, a Senior Legal Hotline, Domestic Violence Legal Advice Line and Fair Lending Hotline.  Firm attorneys, staff, and interns seek equal justice for the underprivileged and poor through legal representation, community outreach, and education. 

This internship position is in ILAS's Boise office.  The intern will work with the Boise Office managing attorney who primarily handles domestic violence casework in Idaho's Fourth Judicial District.  An intern will have the opportunity to take on substantial responsibilities, which may include: calling and meeting with clients, interviewing witnesses, assisting in trial preparation, researching and writing briefs to courts and office memoranda, drafting complaints and other pleadings and conducting educational workshops The intern will also be responsible for administrative tasks like filing and copying.

This position may also offer opportunities to work with other attorneysat ILAS's Boise office on issues in elder law, estate planning, public entitlements and housing law.

TIME COMMITMENT: The time commitment will generally be governed by University of Idaho requirements to obtain credit.  For interns who will not receive credit time commitment is negotiable.  At least 15 hours per week for at least 8 weeks during the summer is required. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of first year of law school; interest in working for clients with low incomes and on poverty law issues; self-motivation; strong sense of justice; professionalism; willingness to work under pressure and come early or stay late when necessary; excellent interpersonal and legal writing skills, or a strong interest in improving them.
