What is predatory lending?
Predatory lending is the practice of preying on, or taking advantage of, an individual or group of people that may have a difficult time buying or refinancing a home such as people who may be poor, uneducated, elderly, or in a protected class. Under the Fair Housing Act, a protected class is a group of people who share common characteristics and are protected from discrimination on the basis of race, religion, national origin, color, disability, familial status, and gender.

Pyramid schemes are among the oldest and most common consumer scams. While pyramid schemes may be disguised as “gift” programs or “networking” plans, they have certain things in common. Pyramids are illegal. Pyramids will fail. People will lose money.

"Slamming" describes the practice of changing a consumer=s local or long distance company without the consumer's knowledge or consent.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has rules that require a consumer's approval before a long distance carrier can be changed.
Idaho is one of several states that have laws prohibiting slamming. Unfortunately, some telephone companies use deceptive and misleading telemarketing techniques designed to trick people into giving authorization to switch telephone companies.

In 2002, Idaho’s legislature passed a new law. Many individuals (and organizations) worked for many years to ensure passage of this new law. Those who are dedicated (and committed) to ensure justice and equality for Idaho’s farmworkers are interested in letting farmworkers know about this new law. By doing so, the farmworkers and their families can continue to learn about their rights.
This guide provides general information about federal and state labor laws. It is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for the law. The federal Fair Labor Standards Act can be found at Title 29 United States Code, Chapter 8. State law regarding minimum wage requirements can be found at Title 44, Chapter 15, Idaho Code; and state law regarding the payment of wages can be found at Title 45, Chapter 6, Idaho Code. The farm labor contractor licensing law may be found at Title 44, Chapter 16, Idaho Code. If legal advice is required, an attorney should be contacted.
