In the course of a busy day, you may write a check at the grocery store, charge tickets to a ball game, rent a car, mail your tax returns, change service providers for your cell phone, or apply for a credit card. Chances are you don’t give these everyday transactions a second thought. But an identity thief does.
Identity theft occurs when someone uses your name, Social Security number, date of birth, or other identifying information, without authority, to commit fraud. Many collection lawsuits are brought by companies called Debt Buyers. Debt Buyers pay money to other companies for the right to collect money owed to those companies. If you feel you have been discriminated against by a housing provider, filing a complaint can be a crucial way to protect you and prevent future discrimination in our community.
Housing discrimination based on your race, color, national origin, religion, sex, family status, or disability is illegal by federal law. If you have been trying to buy or rent a home or apartment and you believe your rights have been violated, you can file a fair housing complaint.
Your fair housing rights are protected under Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act). If those rights have been violated, you can file a complaint with HUD.
Filing a Fair Housing Complaint
A complaint must be filed with HUD within one year of the date the discrimination occurred.
If you have an attorney, notify your attorney of the complaint.
Collect and review the documents pertinent to the complaint and make a list of potential witnesses to the incident in question.
It is a good idea to keep records on all prospective, current, and past residents. You should also have a written screening policy and documentation showing that policy is uniformly and consistently applied to each applicant.

In October 2011, Idaho Legal Aid Services (ILAS) was awarded funds to form the Idaho Coalition Against Identity Theft (ICAIT) to serve Idaho identity theft victims. The Maryland Crime Victims' Resource Center awarded ILAS funds from the U.S.
Identity theft is a crime in which an impostor uses the name, social security number, and/or other identifying information of a victim to open credit accounts, use existing credit accounts, provide the victim's name to police during an arrest, or gain other benefits such a medical service, employment, or government benefits by using the victim's identity.
